1974 IROQUOIS Mk II - For Sale
The Iroquois MKll is a catamaran sailboat designed by J.R. (Rod) Macalpine-Downie and built by Sailcraft Ltd. The hull is made of fibreglass. It has a fractional rig. A fractional rig has smaller headsails which make tacking easier, which is an advantage for cruisers and racers, of course. It has a centreboard keel, a pivoting lifting keel, allowing to sail both coastal and inland waters. It is a light, simple boat which sails well they are capable of serious sailing or cruising, family sailing. These are fast, well performing little catamarans and loads of fun. The auxiliary power was provided by a 10hp outboard engine, this one has a nearly new, very low hours Yamaha 9.9. Though it has recent new windows, this boat will require some refitting but is a nice, clean example.

Why we like it - The Iroquois MKll is a well built catamaran capable of serious sailing or cruising. These are fast little catamarans and loads of fun. This vessel was enjoyed and loved for eighteen years, then fell into disrepair in a yard for several years, due to ill health of the owner. The owner recovered, and started to refit her in 2020, fitting new windows and a new Yamaha 9.9 outboard the vessel is making good progress. The new arrangement allowed the saloon table to be much larger, creating more comfortable mealtimes. The new, larger saloon seating converts into a double bed. The lockers and shelves that were removed were to be replaced with netting storage bags. A holding tank was fitted and linked to the heads so waste water can be stored until it can be emptied offshore. There is still work to be completed, so the price is negotiable to a point.

  • Owners Comments/History - Iroquois Mk 2 (1974) 'We have owned ithe boat since 1995, moving up from a 23’ Hirondelle cat. We have enjoyed it as a cruising holiday home (Parents and two sons) with Emsworth as our base, sailing around the Solent, along the south coast to Dorset, Devon and Cornwall then across to the Channel Islands. The spacious accommodation, good turn of speed and shallow draught (with boards up) have been real assets. We would explore places that boats with deeper draughts could not go, such as the River Dart to Totnes, from Salcombe up to Kingsbridge, up the Tamar to Gunnislake, St Michael’s Mount and Gweek on the Helford River. This was especially valuable in bad weather when sheltered inland places could be used to explore ashore, rather than sitting it out on a bouncing mooring or in a windswept marina. Drying out on the beach provided a perfect beach hut. The children could play all day while the adults could do everything at a relaxed pace. The large foredeck allowed us to carry all the beach ‘toys’: Topper sailing dinghy, windsurfer and kayak. There are two large foredeck lockers and two large aft deck lockers, so the inflatable tender, fenders, warps, spinnaker, spare petrol and gas tanks, portable water tanks etc can all be stowed away easily. As with all catamarans, it provides a stable platform which makes moving around on deck easy when sailing and life in the cabin is more comfortable with no wallowing, rolling motion. The saloon seating allows an all-round view through the large windows. When we bought the boat we added several new hatches to improve ventilation and allow emergency exit routes from all cabins. We began a major refit in 2013 but unexpected ill health put a stop to this and it sat on the hard for 7 years. Health problems resolved, we restarted the refit in 2020 but the intervening 7 years had added two daughters-in-law and three grandchildren. As they said in Jaws: “We’re going to need a bigger boat”. We were not expecting to sell, but our dream boat came on the market so it is now for sale. A lot of work has been done, but there is plenty left to do. The refit started in 2013 with the creation of a more open-plan saloon and cabin arrangement to reduce weight and improve sailing performance. The new arrangement allowed the saloon table to be much larger, creating more comfortable mealtimes. The new, larger saloon seating converts into a double bed. The lockers and shelves that were removed were to be replaced with netting storage bags. A holding tank was fitted and linked to the heads so waste water can be stored until it can be emptied offshore.'
